Alonso signs Real Madrid extension to 2016

MADRID (AP) — Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso has signed a two-year contract extension that will keep him at the Spanish club until 2016.

The Spain international had delayed re-signing with Madrid with his contract up in June and reported interest from English club Chelsea and Juventus in Italy.

Alonso won one Spanish league title with Madrid, which did not release the financial terms of the new contract.

The 32-year-old Alonso has been a key figure in Madrid's squad with 204 appearances since his 2009/10 arrival from Liverpool, where he won the Champions League in 2005.

The former Real Sociedad player has helped Spain win the World Cup between back-to-back European championships.
