Official: Mistakes led to Afghan Quran burnings

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — A Western official says a series of unintentional mistakes led to the burning of Qurans and other Islamic texts at a U.S. base in Afghanistan and that five American troops could face a disciplinary review over it.

The official, who has knowledge of the investigation, said on Saturday that the personnel involved did not intentionally desecrate the religious books and that a series of mistakes led to the incident.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the case.

The joint Afghan-U.S. investigation is still under legal review by the military. A more formal U.S. military investigation is still weeks away from completion.

Afghanistan's top religious leaders demanded on Friday that those involved be put on public trial.
