5 police killed in attack in Indian Kashmir

SRINAGAR, India (AP) — Police say suspected separatist rebels stormed into a police station in the Indian portion of Kashmir and shot and killed at least five police officers.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for Thursday's attack in the town of Hiranagar in Jammu region.

Several police officers in the area said three gunmen dressed in Indian army uniforms sprayed bullets at the police station. They escaped in a truck which they hijacked after the attack.

The officers spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to talk to reporters.

The region is nearly 350 kilometers (220 miles) south of Srinagar, the main city in the Indian portion of Kashmir.

Both India and Pakistan claim Kashmir in its entirety, and rebel groups have been fighting Indian rule since 1989.
