SRINAGAR, India (AP) — Police say insurgents opened fire in a crowded market in the Indian portion of Kashmir, killing one civilian and critically wounding a policeman.
Police officer Imtiaz Hussain says the attackers targeted the policeman, who was attending to a traffic jam in the town of Sopore on Sunday. He says a shopper was fatally shot in the firing, and that the assailants fled after the attack.
Sopore is 55 kilometers (35 miles) north of Srinagar, the main city in Indian Kashmir.
Nearly a dozen rebel groups fighting for an independent Kashmir or its merger with Pakistan often target Indian forces, though militant attacks have decreased dramatically in recent years.
Kashmir is divided between India and Pakistan. Both claim it in entirety and have fought two wars over the region since 1947.
