Vaadhoo Green Farm opens with renewable energy; expected to generate MVR 80,000 monthly

Vaadhoo Green Farm was officially inaugurated on Tuesday as a renewable energy-powered hydroponics facility aimed at boosting food security and women’s economic empowerment.

The farm was opened by Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare Dr. Mariyam Mariya. Designed to produce 600 kilograms of cucumber and 400 kilograms of edible leaves per cycle, the facility is expected to generate an income of MVR 80,000 per month, according to the ministry.

As part of the initiative, 18 women received advanced training in hydroponics farming, while another 25 were trained in the installation and maintenance of solar energy systems.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare described the project as a key step toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Minister Mariya said the farm represents a significant milestone in modernizing the agricultural sector.

“This is important work that will provide useful lessons to take the agricultural industry to new heights,” she said.

She emphasized that empowering women through hydroponics farming and equipping them with modern agricultural skills is a vital step toward ensuring food security in the Maldives.
