Islamic Minister Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed says arrangements are underway to bring back a Maldivian pilgrim who fell critically ill while performing Umrah during the school holidays.

More than 7,500 Maldivians travelled to Mecca for Umrah this holiday season. In a message shared with the media, Shaheem said one pilgrim had been admitted to hospital and that the family, with government support, is working to bring him home.

The minister said the patient is scheduled to be transported to Male' on the 10th of this month, with assistance from the national airline Maldivian and the state‑run IGMH.

Shaheem added that aside from this case, all other Maldivian pilgrims are in good condition.

Umrah travel has become increasingly common among Maldivians, with many families travelling together and numerous organisations offering packages. While Umrah trips previously required joining a group, individuals can now make the journey independently, contributing to the rise in numbers.

According to figures shared by Shaheem late last month, 7,726 people are performing Umrah during this holiday period.
