Criminal Court remands another police officer for violence and obstructing duty

The Criminal Court on Monday ordered the remand of another police officer on charges of obstructing police duty and aggression.  

The officer, identified as Mohamed Mausoom, 22, from M. Kolhufushi, was arrested after allegedly obstructing duty and engaging in a fight when stopped at a police vehicle checkpoint. The court noted that, as a serving officer, Mausoom carried a high degree of responsibility in law enforcement, and ordered him to be remanded in custody for two days.  

This comes just days after another policeman, Ali Manik, 43, of S. Hithadhoo, was arrested on Friday. Ali, who works in police administration and resides at Iskandhar Barracks, was charged with entering a salon, causing trouble, damaging property, fighting with an employee, and obstructing police work.  

On Sunday, the Criminal Court ordered Ali to be remanded for five days. During the hearing, he told the court that he regularly visited the salon and was “not of sound mind” on the day of the incident, claiming he had not slept for several days.  

Police confirmed that Ali has been suspended without pay, and that the Professional Standards Command is investigating the criminal case while also pursuing administrative action.  

The arrests highlight growing scrutiny of police conduct, with two officers now facing criminal proceedings within the span of a week.
