Hulhumale' Hospital will introduce inpatient mental health services in 2026, CEO of the Male' City Group of Hospitals (MCGH) Ibrahim Abdul Razzaq Haleem announced on Thursday.
Speaking on state media PSM’s Week 104 program marking the government’s two-year anniversary, Haleem said major upgrades are underway at Hulhumale' Hospital, including the addition of 28 new beds.
“We are preparing to start EEG services and urology services. Mental health services are currently only outpatient. We are working to expand the area with an inpatient ward,” Haleem said.
A ten-storey building is also being developed at Hulhumale' Hospital as part of the expansion.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, speaking at the government’s anniversary ceremony on November 17, highlighted that the administration has prioritized strengthening hospitals in the Male' area. He noted that many new employees have been deployed and that next year’s budget includes the establishment of multiple specialty services.
The 2026 state budget allocates MVR 831 million for the health sector, comprising MVR 500 million for projects and MVR 331 million for various activities. The government says this investment aims to reduce the number of Maldivians seeking treatment abroad, particularly in Sri Lanka and India.
While the health sector has been given top priority, the budget for housing has drawn criticism for underspending compared to allocations.
