'Faith, trust, development': Saudi envoy praises Maldives ties

Saudi Arabia will remain a close and committed partner to the Maldives in its efforts to strengthen ties across the Islamic world, Saudi Ambassador to the Maldives Yahya Hassan Al-Qahtani said on Thursday.

Speaking at a media briefing in Male', the Ambassador reaffirmed the Kingdom’s readiness to work with Maldivian authorities to expand opportunities for the Maldivian people. “Saudi Arabia’s investments are not just financial, they are a symbol of our religious ties, trust, and friendship,” he said.

He highlighted the introduction of the Makkah Route Initiative in the Maldives as a tangible benefit of bilateral cooperation. The initiative allows Maldivian pilgrims to complete immigration, customs, and health checks at Velana International Airport before departure, easing their journey to Saudi Arabia.

“The relationship with Maldives is long-term, based on shared beliefs and principles. It prioritizes development, is rooted in religious solidarity, and guided by a common vision,” the Ambassador said.

He also emphasized that Saudi Arabia sees itself as a close and accepting friend to the Maldives, and remains committed to deepening cooperation in areas such as infrastructure, Islamic affairs, and people-to-people ties.

Saudi-Maldives diplomatic relations were formally established on 17 March 1981. The Saudi Embassy in Male' opened in August 2015, marking a new chapter of direct engagement. Since then, the Saudi Fund for Development has financed 14 major projects in the Maldives, with cumulative funding exceeding USD 488 million, including support for Hulhumale' Phase 2, Velana International Airport expansion, and the S. Hithadhoo Regional Hospital.

The Ambassador’s remarks also echoed Saudi Arabia’s broader Vision 2030 strategy, which aims to position the Kingdom as a global hub for Islamic culture and services, while fostering sustainable development and regional partnerships.
