The main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has made six demands related to housing, giving President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration until November 17 – when it will mark two years in office – to meet the demands.

The demands were made by the MDP during a rally in Male’ on Friday titled ‘Koba koba magey flat, koba koba magey goathi’, which roughly translates to “where’s my flat, where’s my land?”.

One of the demands made was that the People’s National Congress (PNC) administration postpone reclamation works on the Rasmale’ project until land is reclaimed in Hulhumale’ Phase III, Gulhifalhu, Giraavaru Falhu, and Uthuru Thila Falhu.

The party also demanded that the incumbent administration handover flats under the ‘Gedhoruveriya’ housing scheme based on the list of recipients publicized by the MDP administration in 2023, tap into the line of credit from India to issue flats to the remaining 9,763 applicants who were listed as eligible for flats, and start work on constructing 7,000 units that were previously contracted out.

Additional demands:

  • Change the lease agreement for the 4,000 flats developed by Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation (FDC) to a purchase agreement
  • Drop the downpayment and still to the original rent announced by the MDP administration for the 4,000 flats
  • Immediate initiation of reclamation works on Hulhumale’ Phase III, Gulhifalhu, Giraavaru Falhu, and Uthuru Thila Falhu, and establishment of basic infrastructure
  • Immediate initiation of evaluation of applications of 40,594 families for the second phase of ‘Gedhoruveriya’ and ‘Binveriya’ schemes

The party gave until 08:30 pm on November 17 for the PNC administration to meet the demands.
