In Saturday’s referendum, Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo voted to establish separate councils, formally seeking administrative independence from Addu City Council. Meanwhile, a majority in Feydhoo voted against separation, opting to remain under the existing council structure.

Voting for the Addu City referendum began at 8:00 hours and by 16:00, most polling stations had closed.

The counting of votes is now underway.

Many ballot boxes have already been counted. Preliminary results show that Feydhoo residents want to continue their administrative governance under the Addu City Council. Meanwhile, Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo, geographically separate from Addu’s connected islands, have voted to form independent councils for each island.

According to current results:

  • Hulhudhoo: Over 67% of voters supported secession

  • Meedhoo: More than 82% voted in favor of forming a separate council
